Finding peace in my own hero's journey

Rebecca Guevara's, book, "Blossoms of the Lower Branches" is a well researched, thought provoking work of Guevara's personal account with an unexpected death and the ensuing grief. It is not a typical self-help manual with five or seven steps to obtain freedom from heartache. Instead, Guevara interweaves her emotions and responses to her brother's death with metaphors drawn creatively from mythical and historical heroes. She also interposes stories from familiar members of society who have walked a hero's journey: C. S. Lewis, Candy Lightner (MADD), and Mikal Gilmore (Gary Gilmore's brother) among others.
If you are not familiar with the hero's journey, Guevara's book will exhaustively, although gently, walk you down the path of enlightenment; a path you may already be on, although unaware, or a path you have completed but did not comprehend. Guevara points out the differences between mourning and grieving and compassionately conveys there is no schedule to keep. "The real point is whether life is resumed in a healthy productive way."
There is much to glean from Guevara's book. She outlines the challenges one faces and the dangerous, self-destructive life-styles people often fall into as they struggle to manage life without their loved one. She warns: "If we don't take control ourselves, a messenger may come as a spouse, child or friend who out of exasperation and spent patience rightfully declares...`Is this how you're going to spend the rest of life?'"
Guevara tackles the worn out phrase "finding closure" with great acumen. I was comforted to learn that others found emptiness in a too often used cliché that would have you believe "...grief is a time limited process from which we all recover." The words that comforted me were "...you do find a place for loss, a way to hold it and live with it."
"Blossoms of the Lower Branches" sat on my shelf for months before I was brave enough to open the spine and discover I had survived my journey and could call myself a hero. I cared for both of my parents as one suffered from Alzheimer's and the other kidney disease. I watched my parents die slowly before my eyes and then watched them take their last breaths. In two weeks, I lost both parents. I would wish this experience on no one; however, given the choice, I would walk that same path again. Guevara's book helped me realize that my experience allowed me to "...feel the size of my soul."
If you are learning how to live after the loss of a loved one, Guevara's words will give you the knowledge necessary to find a place of peace.

A touching and beautiful book, written from the depth of a grieving sister's soul….

A very truthfully and courageously written window into the soul. At once, painful and joy-filled. One begins to know the writer's individual and family pain as much as one could. For anyone who has ever lost a sibling, tragically, or too soon, or parented one, I strongly recommend that you read this deeply loving and well researched account of the lifelong journey that is the phantom compainion to the suffering.

Decent Read for the Cruise Ship Crowd, But Not For A Real Traveler...

I've been addicted to travel books lately, partly because I'm subsconsciously planning for my next big trip and partly due to wishful thinking. The premise is very appealing - quit your job and travel around the world for a year. The author is an experienced writer, and it definitely shows. However, I found the book to be a pretty disappointing read. I was expecting it to be full of anecdotes of a traveler living among the locals and embracing their cultures by emulating their way of life. Instead, it reads like a bunch of Tripadvisor.com reviews stringed together, and interactions were mostly with workers and members of the hospitality industry (hotel owners, clerks, porters, etc) and other western tourists, not with the locals. Tried to stay in a backpackers' hostel in New Zealand but got intimidated and left for a luxury hotel the next day? Frowning on India for being such a poor country and being so irritated that the author never wanted to come back again? $160 per night hotel rooms in Nepal, one of the 10 poorest countries in the world? Come on. That is not authentic travel at all. It reads what you'd expect of someone who's vacationed only on cruise ships were to suddenly get displaced in another country (yes, I know this is the same author who wrote "Kindness of Strangers: Penniless Across America").

If you're someone who's in your 30s or 40s and never really traveled abroad before, and would like to know what to expect, maybe this is a good book. But if you're a backpacker, or a regular visitor of hostels, or someone who travels not for the sake of checklisting countries visited but to embrace and learn new cultures, then this book is probably not for you - and like me, you'll probably find yourself shaking your head at the missed opportunities throughout the book.

A Fun Read for New Travellers

What with growing up in a low socio-economic country town, working my butt off to get through University and only just landing a graduate job I confess I am nowhere near as well travelled as I would like to be.

I found this book enjoyable for someone like me who has heard of these places, is considering travelling to a lot of them but has never been. The chapters are short and sweet and while its very obvious you are not getting a full blow by blow account of the entire journey its easy to pick up and put down as needed.

I agree with other reviews that this would not appeal to a very well travelled person - but if you are just starting to dip your toes into the world you could do a lot worse than this book!

Fun Journey

I really enjoyed this book. While it read similar to a series of newspaper columns, that's what I expected based on the book introduction. I really enjoyed the sections on Nepal, China, and Chile. They gave me a feel for the people, the culture, and several potential travel ideas. The Jenny Xu story was touching. It was fun to be a third traveler on this journey.

I checked this book out of the library not expecting much more than a rehash of old information. Not true, he has incoporated new information with updated reasonings and explanations that made me order this book even before I finished it.

Complementary to official OF documentation

At first, I was hoping that this book will act as a easier to read version of OpenFlow documentation. I hoped that it will present some examples by analogy to many of OF features. When I read first few chapters I had a moment of lack of faith. This book did not meet my expectations nor my needs at all. But (thankfully) since I have spent some money on it, I have decided to read on.

After further reading I can say that if you want to have an overall knowledge on OpenFlow - read the official documentation ... but if you are planning on implementing some OpenFlow logic to a switch or a southbound plugin to a controller - grab this book. It may help.

Each chapter of this book is written with use of the same template. This is extremely boring to read, but thanks to this, even if you will jump in into a chapter in the middle of the book, you will know where to look for information you need.

In overall, this is not a book that I expected to be, but I can say that I am happy that I have read it.

Great recipies that helps one develop in OpenFlow switch and OpenFlow controller. Manage multiple switches from a single controller and a single switch from multiple controllers with different controller roles. Would recommend it to network protocol developers & SDN controller application developers.

This is a very useful reference to have to hand when working with Openflow on merchant silicon switches. It also very usefully complements the introductory book by Azodolmolky - Software Defined Networking with OpenFlow.
