Finding peace in my own hero's journey

Rebecca Guevara's, book, "Blossoms of the Lower Branches" is a well researched, thought provoking work of Guevara's personal account with an unexpected death and the ensuing grief. It is not a typical self-help manual with five or seven steps to obtain freedom from heartache. Instead, Guevara interweaves her emotions and responses to her brother's death with metaphors drawn creatively from mythical and historical heroes. She also interposes stories from familiar members of society who have walked a hero's journey: C. S. Lewis, Candy Lightner (MADD), and Mikal Gilmore (Gary Gilmore's brother) among others.
If you are not familiar with the hero's journey, Guevara's book will exhaustively, although gently, walk you down the path of enlightenment; a path you may already be on, although unaware, or a path you have completed but did not comprehend. Guevara points out the differences between mourning and grieving and compassionately conveys there is no schedule to keep. "The real point is whether life is resumed in a healthy productive way."
There is much to glean from Guevara's book. She outlines the challenges one faces and the dangerous, self-destructive life-styles people often fall into as they struggle to manage life without their loved one. She warns: "If we don't take control ourselves, a messenger may come as a spouse, child or friend who out of exasperation and spent patience rightfully declares...`Is this how you're going to spend the rest of life?'"
Guevara tackles the worn out phrase "finding closure" with great acumen. I was comforted to learn that others found emptiness in a too often used cliché that would have you believe "...grief is a time limited process from which we all recover." The words that comforted me were "...you do find a place for loss, a way to hold it and live with it."
"Blossoms of the Lower Branches" sat on my shelf for months before I was brave enough to open the spine and discover I had survived my journey and could call myself a hero. I cared for both of my parents as one suffered from Alzheimer's and the other kidney disease. I watched my parents die slowly before my eyes and then watched them take their last breaths. In two weeks, I lost both parents. I would wish this experience on no one; however, given the choice, I would walk that same path again. Guevara's book helped me realize that my experience allowed me to "...feel the size of my soul."

A touching and beautiful book, written from the depth of a grieving sister's soul….

A very truthfully and courageously written window into the soul. At once, painful and joy-filled. One begins to know the writer's individual and family pain as much as one could. For anyone who has ever lost a sibling, tragically, or too soon, or parented one, I strongly recommend that you read this deeply loving and well researched account of the lifelong journey that is the phantom compainion to the suffering.
