A theoretical case for these predictions was proposed however, the overall results suggested an alternative interpretation. The individual facets that yielded the strongest relationship suggested that not introversion and neuroticism, but higher levels of trust with lower levels of competence; in conjunction with the amnestic form of dissociative coping established the strongest association with PTSD symptom severity. These results converge with a social-cognitive perspective of shattered assumptions (Janoff-Bulman, 1992)that may suggest core beliefs maintain symptom severity.

Great illustrations!

I bought this for my graduate-level human neuroanatomy primarily for the excellent illustrations. Rather than having only two-dimensional slices of all the structures, this book has very nice three-dimensional rendering. This gives the reader a better spatial representation of where structures are, which are close to one another (implying there could be connections), etc.

Textbook for Common Core - GREAT!!!

This is a good textbook that coincides with the Common Core curriculum. It has good explainations and examples, but the anwer key is lacking. I bought this to keep at home so I can help my 8th grader but I would like it better if all the questions had answers because I feel like I am learning Algebra all over again and I want to make sure I am helping him in the right way. The book has cartoon characters throughout that make it fun and it does a good job with the example problems.

The book itself is a great Algebra book. Examples are well explained and the format is logical. I was disappointed in the condition of the book itself. The "new" book was received with the cover bent (much more than small bent corners). If I needed to resell it even without using it, I would not be able to list it as "new."

Great Algebra Book

I taught my son Algebra using this book and found it to be fantastic. Each section of each chapter has great examples and the sections build on each other getting progressively harder. The problems are broken down into easy to understand steps along with text explaining how one goes from step to step. There are answers to all the odd numbered problems in the back as well as to the Chapter Review questions. This book is a great resource.

Ian Rothmann is Professor of Industrial Psychology and Director of the Optentia Research Focus Area at the North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa. Ian’s research interest is the assessment and development of human potential and flourishing in institutions. He is author/co-author of 165 peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters in handbooks.

Cary L. Cooper is Distinguished Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health at Lancaster University Management School, UK. He is the author and editor of more than 125 books and is one of Britain's most quoted business experts. He was awarded the CBE by the Queen in 2001 for his contributions to organizational health and safety; and in 2014 he was awarded a Knighthood for his contribution to the social sciences.

A highly readable and influential work by a seminal thinker.

On the list of thinkers who have exemplified what Brand Blanshard called the "rational temper," John Locke must surely place very high. The reader of this his most influential and important work will be constantly struck not only by his sane and sober approach to philosophical questions but indeed, as another reviewer has noted, by how commonplace his own proposed solutions have become.
It will be found that Locke, generally regarded as an "empiricist," is extremely hard to pigeonhole. Though rejecting (an earlier version of) the doctrine of "innate ideas" and insisting that all of our ideas come from or through sense-experience, he was clearly a "rationalist" as regards the nature of knowledge itself. Both modern empiricists and modern rationalists could benefit from a healthy infusion of his reasonable, even-handed tenor and uncommon common sense.
Also highly recommended is E.J. Lowe's _Locke On Human Understanding_, an excellent introduction and overview to this great work as well as a delightful and highly insightful attempt to show that many of Locke's positions are still defensible today (though perhaps in need of some modification). It is a handy companion to the present volume both for the beginner and for the longtime reader of Locke; even those who know Locke well (or think they do!) will find Lowe's work engaging and enlightening.

One of the major works in Western Philosophy

It has been many years since I pondered and repondered over this volume. Locke is an important figure in the history of Western Philosophy. He is really the founding figure of the great empirical tradition which would go through Hume all the way up to the various analytical philosophies of the twentieth century.

He is also a major political thinker whose importance for the great founders of America cannot be overestimated.

Locke talks about the mind as tabula rasa as a blank slate which experience writes upon, and reflection compounds into ' complex ideas' The simple ideas come through experience. This total rejection of inherent ideas, and inherent structures of the mind is something which a lot of modern linguistic theory rejects.

As to the way we apprehend experience immediately I think here too Locke is in some way contradicted by modern psychological theory which would speak in some sense about our structuring that experience through our own participation in perception. In other words Locke's model of perception is I believe a far too ' passive one'. I cannot however judge, as I do not know enough about the subject whether or not Lockean categories in these areas of perception, reflection and in general description of the way we experience and know the world have any force today.

Locke's political thinking is incorporated in the Declaration of Independence with its formulation of rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As strong opponent of tyrannical authority in the political world Locke's thinking made a real impact on the world. He is one of those thinkers at the foundation of modern democratic thought.

The book is not easy reading. I can remember going back over it again and again to try and understand the difference between primary and secondary qualities- I can remember trying to understand how much of what Locke says has validity and is ' really the truth'.

Parenthetically I think of how as a young person knowing the truth finding the truth was such a supreme value for me. And how I thus felt it so important to know whether Locke was ' right' or not. Time and experience perhaps have made me worse. And I see this work as yet one more effort to interpret and understand Reality . This is as if to say I at this age anyway seem to accept the idea that I myself will not know and find the truth in regard to everything, including the philosophy of Locke.

Again. This is one of the major works of Western philosophy and it should be read and studied by one who cares to know the Western philosophical tradition.

A microbe that eats oil has somehow appeared in oil fields around the world. Any machine that runs on gasoline is rendered inoperable by the microbe. Greg Gillette, an epidemiologist, tries to beat the clock and find an antidote to the techno-plague before society collapses. Written with urgency and wit, the novel (already snapped up by Hollywood) is imaginative and plausibly plotted. The book doesn't feature Crichton's lengthy scientific explanations, but it does have the same sort of plucky characters and high-octane pacing. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser. David Pitt

Don't bother

Black Monday

As others have written, the plot (oil eating/crapping bacteria) was interesting but during the course of the novel, our main character aka SUPERHERO manages to fight entrenched bureaucrats, discover the means of infection, and foil the evil plot, while being a good father, husband and neighborhood block leader. By the end, everyone Good becomes a Better person and a few neighborhood nasties get their just desserts. The waffling US President probably isn't going to be reelected and the world economy; after ditching the US dollar as the world reserve currency, gets all better in a paragraph and a half. Hurrah!

My sentences have become on running and more incoherent as I realize the time I wasted reading this tripe.

Oh, another thing. A submarine captain and a couple of blue jackets rowing ashore in a rubber dingy would not conduct a snatch and grab of the EVIL Mastermind on foreign soil. That's what we have SEALS for.

Great Premise, Flawed Execution

BLACK MONDAY starts with a great "what if" premise: what if the Western world was suddenly deprived of the use of all of its oil? Unfortunately, Reiss doesn't really deliver on the promise of this idea.

In this novel, Reiss goes into familiar territory: within a few weeks of the oil disappearing, he imagines a post-apocolyptic world arising in the United States where Americans, stripped of all their modern conveniences, become violent and cannibalistic. I've seen this type of world before, in novels like Stephen King's THE STAND and Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD. There is nothing new about Reiss's own attempt, which falls well short of what's been done before.

The major flaw of this novel is the flat characterization. Reiss just isn't very good at creating characters that are distinct and memorable. The square-jawed hero of this book is a virtual superman -- and not the least bit interesting. Most of the dialogue is bland and colorless. There's a lot of action in this novel, but you don't care about any of the key characters, so the suspense level is close to zero.

BLACK MONDAY isn't exactly terrible, but I just didn't find it very engaging. Other than some interesting scientific information about how oil is used and refined, there is little about this book that stands out. I would give it a pass if I were you.

Entertainings, Some gross scenes...

What would happen if a super-bug infects the nations oil leading to massive economic breakdown, looting, and paralyziation of the nations's military? Reiss explores this premise in Black Monday, a thriller about corruption, human greed, and human perseverence.

I really enjoyed the premise of this novel and many of the characters.

I did find myself mildly put off by the first part of the book which describes a hitman gruesomely killing someone in a casino. The same hitman commits several murders during the course of the book including murdering children. There is also a semi-graphic scene of torture which I found rather disturbinng. I found the graphic quality almost made me stop listening. I don't mind thrillers, sex and violence but I don't need the details.

The hero Gillette is interesting but a tad superhuman. Not only is he an ex-gang member, but he is a super-scientist of the ludlum variety, who can out-shoot, out-ski, and out-snowmobile the badguys at a moments notice. He also has 2 hot women lusting after him. Fine, but a little fantastic.

4 stars. The ending was a bit over-the-top, and I could've done without the graphic murder, it didn't add anything in my opinion.

McBrearty at the top of his game

Long-time McBrearty fans may regard this, his third collection, as his most remarkable--which is saying a lot. McBrearty's stories tend to fall into one of two categories, equally on display here. One category can perhaps best be considered as Ian Frazier-like postmodern riffs. Immensely clever commentaries, at their best, as in "First Day," which recounts the narrator's adventures toting a very big box on his first day at work, these riffs, taken beyond face value, may act as metaphors for the experience of anybody who has had even a tenuous connection with the circumstance under inspection. It is the second category, however, that represents the major McBrearty. These stories--represented here by "The Helmeted Man," "Acting Class," "The Edge He Carries," and the title story, "Let the Birds Drink in Peace"--are knockouts. Portraits of wry psychological realism, most involve the recollections of emotionally secure middle-aged men whose lives have become, with a twinge of misgiving, studies in the mundane. In these portraits McBrearty's theme is heroism--that one moment (typically in the past and distorted by memory, but giving poignancy to the present) when the narrator did something extraordinary. McBrearty has long been a well-kept secret on the literary landscape, a writer's writer who makes it look easy. Now that the major prize committees are paying increasing (and overdue) attention to work issued by independent presses, he may not be anybody's secret much longer.

One to recommend

These thirteen stories by McBrearty run the gamut from high hilarity to deep brooding. His characters are several versions of Everyman, and the situations they find themselves in range from the surreal to an America reality "thick with ... bourbon and sleepiness." His Texas background can be seen in stories like Back in Town - "Before I drive the wagon into town, my wife makes me promise that I will not go into the saloon where NoNose Ed and the other bad men hang out" - and Colonel Travis's Lament - "Let me tell you what I dreamed of on the ramparts of the Alamo..." Other stories go to a dream-like world that McBrearty populates with night-shift dishwashers (The Dishwasher) and fellows named Peters and Hooter, stuck in a life raft without much more than a prayer (Hello Be Thy Name). It's fashionable to say a writer reminds the reader of some other writer, but McBrearty, a Pushcart Prize recipient, and the 2009 awardee of the Sherwood Anderson Prize, is his own man.

Let The Birds Drink in Peace, a delightful short story collection

In LET THE BIRDS DRINK IN PEACE author Robert Garner McBrearty tells thirteen short stories in a uniquely zany, imaginative style. His narrative is playful, even devil-may-care. Before leaving his home the central character in the story BACK IN TOWN assures his wife he will behave by telling her, "I've given up drinking and whoring and looting and stealing horses and robbing banks and shooting up the town and using foul language." McBrearty is full of surprises. In FIRST DAY a newcomer on the job struggles with moving what McBrearty calls a "big thing;" the story is a metaphor for everyone's first day on the job, in school, or in the military. This is a wonderful collection of stories that will certainly delight readers.
