The most valuable book on your shelf!

I had the first edition of The Southern Living Gardening Book and wore it out over the years. Recently, I purchased the new one, and it's even better! If you garden in the south, you must have this book! The way the book divides the south into zones takes the guess work out of buying plants. If the doesn't say a plant will grow in your zone, don't waste your money. It simply will not. The information for each plant is excellent. And the list is exhuastive. It's the rare plant that isn't listed, and if it's not, it means one of two things: either the plant is so new it wasn't included in the book or it simply won't grow anywhere in the south.

I am a garden designer, and I find the plant lists in the book invaluable. Need evergreens? Need blooming shrubs? Need flowers? Go to the lists and pick and choose according to your needs. For the most part, the plants in the lists will be readily available at your local garden center.

Are you browsing garden catalogs? How many times have you ordered and planted new things just to have them die, making you feel like a failure? Wish I'd bought the hardback edition!

We bought our first home this summer and knew we had to make big changes to the small backyard but had no idea where to begin. This was the first gardening book I bought, and I might never have to buy another! The lists of plants for various conditions is extremely helpful. The plant descriptions are thorough but easy for a beginner like me to understand. And the other gardening procedures and tips, from how to prune a shrub to how to get rid of pests and diseases are equally as readable and useful. A must-have for any Southern gardener!

Excellent reference, moderate print quality

David Howard's photojournalism in "The Last Filipino Head Hunters" does an excellent job of documenting these tribal people and their way of life. Along with photos of their wonderful and often ancient faces, the book captures their jewelry, carvings, fabrics, and tattoos.
As tattoo reference, Howard's book stands alone in its thorough photo documentation of many traditional Filipino male and female designs. This tattoo documentation holds special significance as the elders (some over 100 years old) who wear them are beginning to die out.
The first person narrative text is fun and informative but a little sparse. It is part history and part travelogue, including wonderful tales of people from the Kalinga and Ifugao tribes.
Sadly, the print quality is slightly substandard and some of the photographs are noticeably low in resolution, but the stunning content largely makes up for this.

good book on understudied topic...

excellent read. more of a travel journal than a scientific piece. but still give plenty of ethnographic information. i think the native Filipinos are not studied as much as say the Asmat of New Guinea or the Dyak of Borneo because the Philippines are considered 'modern'. but once you get outside the major cities you are right back in the isolated jungle.

Another excellent addition to the Cambridge Series

I have read several of the books in the Cambridge Music Handbooks Series. The purpose of the books in this series is to aid the listener in understanding the theoretical/analytical aspects of the music (such as form, recurring thematic material, growth process, etc.) as well as the historical background of the piece, including critical reaction to the premiere of the work.
The book is divided logically into four chapters. The first chapter deals with Britten's pacifist beliefs and how they led to his encounter with the poetry of Wilfred Owen, a soldier who had been killed in World War I. Owen turned out a small body of poetry during the last two years of the war, nine of which Britten chose to use in his Requiem, along with the text for the Latin Mass of the Dead.
The second chapter gives the historical background of the piece: commission, composition, and the premiere performance.
The third chapter is subtitled "The musical language: idiom and structure." This chapter details the musical content of the piece and how it conforms or deviates from the traditional Requiem formula set up by Mozart and Verdi. This chapter is the "meat" of the book as far as this critic is concerned. In understanding the musical content, one is better equipped to listen with an ear of understanding instead of ignorance.
The final chapter reveals the critical reception of the piece, which was extremely positive. Most critics immediately hailed this work as Britten's masterpiece. As the author states, "it is difficult to call to mind any other major twentieth-century work which met with such instantaneous and unanimously high praise from almost all sectors of the media."
In conclusion, I can highly recommend this book without hesitation if you are at all interested in the music of the twentieth century. Britten was clearly a brilliant composer; the War Requiem is, arguably, his masterpiece; and this book is a fine tribute to a wonderful piece of music.

Long Awaited Novel in the War World Series

Most fans of Jerry Pournelle's War World and CoDominium series no doubt assumed they would never see a new book. Carr and Hawthorne have added to these series with this great book, which describes in great detail the crucial end to the Sauron insurrection and the coming of the surviving Saurons to Haven, the Warworld. While some of the book is re-hashed from WarWorld anthologies, most is new work of high caliber. Thw authors capture the flavor of earlier works and suck the reader into the curiously sympathetic story of the Sauron's final leader and his quest to save his (not-so-liekable) people.

I have been a fan of the war world series for quite some time and this is the best book of the series i have seen yet. Just the overall look of the book is amazing!!! The cover and inside are is stunning and its great to have all the info in one place as well as the new content. The space battle scenes are incredible and the background info on the Sauron's make me love and hate them at the same time. I'm giving them away to friends of mine for Xmas!!

As a first time reader of the War World series, I was at first concerned I would be lost starting with The Battle of Sauron. Quite the contrary. I was quickly drawn into the Sauron-Imperial conflict, feeling empathy actually for both sides, the characters being very well developed and "human". I especially liked the battle scenes, the tactical and technical logistics of the battles were amazing, as well as the human side of war. I plan to buy as gifts for my fellow scifi friends.

In this influential writing, "Why Men Rebel" by Ted Robert Gurr covers the root causes of political violence, whether it is riots, rebellions, coups, or insurgencies, Gurr develops what is known as the relative deprivation theory. In this theory, essentially an economic argument, political violence is attributed to a discrepancy between what men and women think they deserve and what they can actually get in society. The resulting frustration culminates in incidences of collective political violence by social groups.

About the Author
Yotam Ottolenghi arrived in the UK from his native Israel in 1997 and set out on a new career in food, after having completed an MA in Comparative Literature whilst working as a journalist in Tel Aviv.

In London he attended The Cordon Bleu after which he worked as a pastry chef in various establishments. In 2002, Yotam and his partners set up Ottolenghi, a unique food shop offering a wide range of freshly made savory dishes, baked products and patisserie items. There are now four Ottolenghi's, as well as NOPI, a brasserie style restaurant in Soho, London.

Since 2006 Ottolenghi has written a column in The Guardian's Weekend Saturday magazine. He is the author of the New York Times bestselling books Plenty, Jerusalem, and Ottolenghi.

SAMI TAMIMI is a partner and head chef at Ottolenghi. Their 2012 Cookbook, Jerusalem, was a New York Times bestseller and was awarded Cookbook of the Year by the International Association of Culinary Professionals.

Ottolenghi scores big with "Ottolenghi"

My admiration for this author/chef knows no limits. Really. I've been cooking out of Ottolenghi's "Plenty" cookbook for the past year or so at least twice a week and it's changed the family's eating habits and appreciation of good taste astronomically. So when this newly published cookbook (from the restaurant menu) was published in the U.S., I was interested. At the same time, I wondered how the newbie could improve and/or expand on the author's two previous (and terrific) books. I shouldn't have been the least bit skeptical. "Ottolenghi" is even better than its predecessors and chock-a-block full of great new food.

I come to this opinion from the perspective of someone who cooks almost exclusively vegetarian dishes. "Ottolenghi" is about two-thirds non-meat in content. Lots of terrific new vegetable entrees and sides, with the usual emphasis on freshness, herbs, nuts and Middle East/Mediterranean spices. What's really new in the author's approach in this cookbook is a generous section on desserts (most of them adaptations of classics) and many recipes for sauces that can be used with a lot of different entrees or as dips, spreads, etc.

I'm just getting started in using this new book--and in fact started with dessert! How does chocolate chestnut bar sound? A kind of exotic brownie, but richer and creamier than the traditional approach. Killer taste. The same chapter includes a fine recipe for a more traditional brownie, but clearly better, judging from the ingredients.

I'm a total fan of this guy and his books and have been giving them as gifts for the past year. I even gave one to a Moroccan friend who is a wonderful cook, but who became an instant admirer and regular user of Ottolengthi's "Plenty". So get the new one or at least one of the earlier books--it/they will change your life.

Amazing

I have so many cookbooks some might see it as ridiculous I buy yet another...but this one is really quite special. This book is very inspiring. Nice pictures, they really bring the dishes to life. However, it's the inventive, thoughtful combination of ingredients that just blow me away. Seriously, I just look at the picture of the green bean and pea dish and 20 other variations pop in my head. I am not a recipe follower too often, mostly I just read and then start chopping whatever is in the kitchen. I heartily recommend it even though I have barely read through 15 pages. The authors are VERY specific in their cooking directions in a really good way. They also like their veggies a bit on the crunchy side for our family's taste, but that is simple to change. I wish it was in paperback so it was easier to read in bed.

Great recipes, could have been more user friendly.

I am a fan of Ottolenghi recipes. I follow their Guardian column 'The New Vegetarian'. I find their recipes fresh, modern, bright and fun. So far I have tried couple of eggplant recipes, pistachio cookies and baked okra. All came out great. Their recipes in Guardian-online are fun as well.
Having said that, I wish they had serving suggestions in this book for recipes. It would also help to have some sample menus, specially for someone new to Mediterranean cooking.
I live in US and as such the book is cumbersome to use because of metric system used throughout. I don't mind that much, but it would have been nice to include a conversion table somewhere. Hopefully, there will be a US edition soon, but I could not wait for it to come out.
The book is beautifully laid out and the pictures are very tempting.
Overall, I like the book a lot.
