Pointless

I loved Current for medicine so I was excited to hear they were doing one for PMR. I bought it right away. Unfortunately, this edition seems haphazardly thrown together. The layout is confusing and often times repetitive as they place certain complications of diseases multiple times throughout the book. For example, there's no chapter on DVT management. Instead, pieces of information about this topic are scattered across 4 different chapters: immobility, SCI, stroke, and ortho AND omitted from sections like TBI, Cancer, and Cardiac rehab. So as a quick reference, it doesn't work. I also wish they would be more specific with treatment options, why to choose one over the other, and what side effects they have. Mostly, it's just a convoluted list of things you may or may not use. And because this is a condensed book of PMR, there's a lot of information that gets left out. So as a principal book for study purposes, it doesn't work. Unfortunately then, I'm not sure what the point of having this book is. Get Braddom for your main study book, and the updated version of the little black book for your reference guide instead.

The Fifty-Nine Icosahedra was originally published in 1938 as No. 6 of "University of Toronto Studies (Mathematical Series)". N either of the others was a professional mathematician. Flather died about 1950, and Petrie, tragically, in a road accident in 1972. Petrie's part in the book consisted in the extremely difficult drawings which consti­ tute the left half of each of the plates (the much simpler ones on the right being mine). A brief biographical note on Petrie will be found on p. 32 of Coxeter's Regular Polytopes (3rd. ed. , Dover, New York, 1973); and it may be added that he was still a schoolboy when he discovered the regular skew polygons that are named after him, and are the occasion for the note on him in Coxeter's book. (Coxeter also was a schoolboy when some of the results for which he will be most remembered were obtained; he and Petrie were schoolboy friends and used to work together on polyhedron and polytope theory. ) Flather's part in the book consisted in making a very beautiful set of miniature models of all the fifty-nine figures. These are still in existence, and in excellent preservation.

Wonderful writing makes for wonderful reading

If you're a fan of great writing, you'll be a fan of this collection. Each story within the collection is short, maximum 4 pages, and they get right to the point. However, like any great story, they save the best for last and you will find yourself looking forward to reading the last paragraph within each story as it is truly the best and most invigorating. Chesterton's control of the English language is stunning and his direct matter of proving a thing is awe-inspiring. If you're a fan of his other works, you may like this one even more because it doesn't take as long to get the same great Chesterton-messages out of the reading. I give this book 5 stars because it really is wonderful when you don't have all day to read, yet still want to learn something or be motivated that the world is not all bad throughout the day. If you've got 15 spare minutes, thats enough to flip through one of these stories and feel better about yourself and the world.

A Century of Wonders

2009 marks the hundredth anniversary of this book from 1909, which is a collection of columns the author penned for a British newspaper, the Daily Mail. As such it's a mixed bag; some of the writing is, in my view a 3, and some a 5, thus my rating of a 4. Sometimes I don't know what he's talking about. Other times I find myself quoting a paragraph in an e-mail. This book contains my first encounter with Chesterton, a brief essay called "On Lying in Bed", which I still think one of his best. But when I began this book, although I avidly devour G.K.'s novels, and some of his nonfiction, like Orthodoxy, this one didn't hold me.

I returned to it now and then, as one does, after reading rather more gripping reads. Then its magic kicked in, and in my view, some of the later essays, particularly those that are travelogues, are the best. Other readers will have their favorites; some of mine are:" The advantages of Having One Leg"; "The Twelve Men"; "The Wind and the Trees"; "In Topsy-Turvy Land"; "The Tower"; "The Orthodox Barber"; "Humanity: An Interlude"; "The Little Birds Who Won't Sing"; "The Travellers in State"; "The Prehistoric Railway Station"; "A Glimpse of My Country"; and "The Ballade of a Strange Town".

That's my dozen keepers from these 39 essays, a rather good haul from a book a century old. The difficulty in this volume is that the references, as in most newspaper columns, are to current controversies, culture, and even jokes of the day. The reason this book celebrates a centennial when so many others of the era are forgotten, is because for Chesterton, those passing fancies, all the rage at the moment, are signposts to conditions common to humanity. That's why he remains so quotable. But neither did he write vaguely about universals; he observed and commented on particular people and places in his time. That's why he remains readable.

Few read the sort of column collected here in our day, and fewer now write it. What one notices on reading any Chesterton, however, on dipping into any book almost anywhere, is his delight in living, and looking, and reuminating. This is not a self-help book, but any reader who helps him or herself to it, may be helped regardless, to see more, and enjoy life more. Because his message at bottom is it's OK to enjoy life, to see it as a good gift, to be thankful and revel in it. This is not the frantic optimism of a prescriptive self-help book. To Chesterton, it's simple realism. As he writes in "The Ballade of a Strange Town":

"The false optimism, the modern happiness, tires us because it tells us we fit into this world. The true happiness is that we don't fit. We come from somewhere else. We have lost our way." A hundred years later these words still ring true. Which is why we're still reading him.

Classic Chesterton

This is a compilation of essays written for his newspaper column. I am always impressed by his poetic and detailed descriptions of the world around him. He covers a variety of subjects and always turns the observations about life into truths that I did not expect. Among my favorites: A Piece of Chalk--where a drawing exercise turns into a lesson on the nature of truth, The Dragon's Grandmother--on why we should read fairy tales to our children, and Twelve Men--the best explanation I have read on why we have juries made of our peers and not professional jurors.

Confused reader :(

I rated this book a 5 star rating {It was a great book for what it was} But it was lacking in parts. I truly loved this book but some parts needed more other parts. Would I recommend this book to others??? yes I would. Would I buy it again?? yea. I just really think it needed more to it at parts{ Im really just all over the place with this book Sorry about that}

Talker , pulled at my Heartstrings

Talker was a series of 3 stories that Amy Lane has brought together as one Novel. This story features Tate Walker and Brian Cooper. Just to bring you up to date, Brian and Tate met on a High School Track Team Bus. This meeting changed their lives.

Tate Walker, severely burned as a baby, has scars both outside and in. His flamboyant dress, tattoos and Mohawk hairstyle were a cover up so people would not look beneath; only Brian did. Their friendship grew, as Brian watched Tate walked out the door on a 'date', where he was raped and brutalized, before Brian could `come out' and tell Tate he loved him. The heartbreaking scene when Tate returned home broken and bleeding telling Brian `he had hoped Brian was gay, but now he is so happy he is not, because he is the only one he has ever felt safe with.' Unbeknownst to Tate, Brian had found the rapist Trevor and beat him bloody.

In Talkers Redemption, Trevor in retaliation comes with two men, pipes and chains, attacking Brian in a parking lot, while Tate is sent for help. Brian lies for months in the hospital battered and broken while the `family' they are surrounded with look on; Old Doc Sutherland their friend and psychologist, and Brian's Aunt offers support to the young men. Talker has to make decisions about overcoming your wildest fears and darkest nightmares.

So you are all caught up, and now readers, we are up to And They Could Live Happily Ever After. I was so excited, having to get to see another glimpse of Talker and Brian. We find that it is a few years later, and they are still battling the remains of Brian's physical hurt from that deadly beating. They both now have scars on their bodies, and Brian has started working with clay. Talker bought him this to help his fingers to work better. College is almost over for Brian. Talker isn't even sure he knows what Brian's degree will be. But Brian has gotten a job in an art store and it blossoms into something Brian loves.

Brian's eyes are finally bright with accomplishment. He is creating things with his hands and he loves it. Brian is given a wonderful opportunity, and would walk away from it all for Talker. Brian is the one, the one who has sacrificed all for Talker. We read this beautiful poignant story and your wish is to take all the pain away for both of them. These boys who you have watched are growing into men. They have had to make some tough decisions along the way and deserve the Big Payout. Only Amy Lane can tell the story of love, home and family. We are shown the sculpture that Brian has made that is Talker, and we cry as Tate Walker sees how Brian Cooper sees him and we wish with all our hearts we could have someone bless us with that kind of love.

It's often difficult to rate a series, as the installments vary, so I'm only giving an overall impression of the series as a whole. The Talker series have a really likable pair who readers would easily root for a HEA. And they do have some serious issues to overcome, which makes the first two books so intense and emotional to read, I think the conflicts are valid and ""gripping"" enough to touch even the most cynical readers. However, by the third book though, it starts to get into that area whether its really necessary for another book - the storyline just doesn't ring true to me anymore. The writing is mostly solid and I think the flashbacks (and flash forwards) style was nicely done. I do believe Amy Lane has her own brand of angst which many fans would lap it up, while some readers might find it overwhelming. I tend to be the latter, but that didn't stop me from shedding a few tears for Brian and Talker.

The series gets a 40 (heck, each book gets a 40). I love Talker. Amy Lane takes the worst and spins it until it’s the best. Talker is brought to life in full color 3D. From the moment he’s introduced in Talker, he’s a living, breathing person. He’s someone you could see walking down the street. He’s also that person you either avoid or want to know better because you see past the tattoos and scars to the individual underneath. Throughout the three books, you cry, laugh, cheer, and cry some more. Amy Lane took harsh reality and gave it a place to call home.
