The lost art of the male pin up.

Hands down, new favorite coffee table book. The era of male pin ups that are included are all stunning. The forward by Lady Bunny is a hoot. Great find!

VINTAGE GAY EROTICA COLLECTION A GEM

A terrific collection of vintage male erotica culled from "physique" magazines, mainly from the 1960's before the onslaught of "anything goes" nude photography.
To those who grew up during this era where access to all-male pictures was limited to muscle mags and the like, this will be a real blast from the past and a nostalgic trip back to more "innocent" but also repressed days.
Petra Mason has assembled some 200 photos, mostly full page, many in color and a very representative selection from the famous all-male studios of the day including Bruce of Los Angeles, Lon of New York, KRIS, Champion, Vulcan, Les Demi Dieux, Douglas of Detroit and Western Photography Guild.
This very handsome, sturdy publication has been broken up into nine sections to emphasize a certain style. For example: "Beefcake" and "Figure Studies" mainly feature muscle guys such as Steve Reeves and Larry Scott, whereas "Swords and Sandals". "Cowboys and Indians" and "Duals in the Sun" tend to display the more whimsical storytelling/fantasy images of the particular studio.
Nothing too risqué here. Remember these were the days before erections and sex scenes became the norm. But there are plenty of awesome men displaying their wares in a wide variety of full frontal poses, ass shots and the favourite prop of the day, the posing pouch. The closest to interaction between the models are some quaint wrestling exhibitions and dual physique poses.
There have been a host of historical physique books in recent years, many concentrating on a single studio. Even if you have these, I would still recommend this beautifully put together volume to be added to your collection.

Disappointment

Was initially excited about this title. Had heard about it in advance as the author was performing her research. However, I question just how much research the author actually performed. The information in this book is marginal, and there is nothing of any real importance. There are certainly no new or valuable insights. In a couple of instances it appears the author did not have full permission to discuss certain photographers. References are vague and lack depth. Comparatively speaking, there are far more valuable and interesting titles on the subject including Brooklyn Boys and several of Reed Massengil's books.

Overall, a disappointment. Perhaps a good reference for someone new to the genre, but there are much better titles available.

Details for DIYers or Modern Carpenters

This book offers plans for several gorgeous Victorian houses, and as such, is an excellent companion book to some of Dover's other architectural offerings. But as the author notes, the ". . . intention primarily was to make it a work of Architectural details . . ." House framing is laid out here, from sill plate to rafters. Back then they used balloon framing, so it's interesting to compare that to modern practices. But the best part of this book is the wealth of detail on a building's, well, details. You get a drawing showing how virtually every feature of a Victorian house if built, inside and out. You'll see how to frame out porches, doors, windows, cornices, and gables. There are examples of turned work - posts, finials, drops, and balusters - lattice work, roof ventilators, and chimney tops.

My favorite part is the treatment of interiors. Staircases are shown in elevation and in details. There are examples of all types of trim work, from wainscoting to fireplace mantels. Best of all, several rooms are shown in perspective or elevation, and then in cutaway detail. There's another book that provides a better set of plans and details (I'll update this when I find the title) for every room in the house, but this provides a great introduction.

If you own a Victorian house, you should have this book before you even think of tearing into any walls. You'll gain an understanding of what's behind the lathe before you cut out something you shouldn't have. If you're building or renovating and like Victorian details, this will give you a lot of ideas that you can incorporate into your house. Today's houses are better built - stronger, well insulated, with all the modern conveniences - but what they lack is detail. This book shows you why our houses now are so hopelessly plain-Jane compared to the houses build a century ago.

Overall a great book.

Great book, but I just wish the images were at higher resolution to see them in greater detail. I would recommend buying the physical copy if you really want to see the tiniest detail.

The Warwick Rowers web site notes that "Our calendars help us to fund our sport, and enable us to do our own outreach programme to young people called Sport Allies." The Warwick Rowers, Proudly Getting Naked For Club and Community. I was pleased to help support their program! You can't look at this without smiling.

Simply a very sexy, or rather, erotic, calendar filled with extremely handsome nude guys and their paddles! Just looking at them, I can sense how much fun they must have had shooting these pics! They are all very joyous and really healthy! I got two of them, for two of my gay friends. I am sure they'll love these! That being said, I admit that I find this calendar awesome, too!

Great Series

I have enjoyed every one of these books. I am almost done with the third one now and am getting bummed that it's almost over. Love the character depth (Grumpy old Van is my favorite). Great plot twists. I highly recommend this series.

A great book by one of my new favorite authors (all thanks to Amazon)

I first picked up one of his books for free when it was displayed on the Pixel of Ink blogsite where they post some free e-books for the day on there and after reading the first book in the series quickly picked up the second. At the time this book wasn't released, but I anticipated it's arrival as the other two were well written, engaging, and fun. All in all, it was a great book, with a good ending. The world in the story in continued in the "Eve of destruction" books which I believe there are others in progress. All the other books he has on Amazon are great reads and I recommend them to fantasy and Sci-fi lovers alike.

Poignant

I absolutely adored this story - told in two timelines as we follow Alice as she arrives at Fiercombe Manor and Elizabeth Stanton, a previous resident who is somewhat enigmatic, this gripped me from the start and is written so beautifully and with such great poignancy that it stayed with me long after I had finished it. The two main characters are appealing and genuinely fascinating, separated as they are by years but both living strangely parallel lives. It really was a most terrific read and I loved every minute of it.

This will certainly be going on my Highly Recommended list for people who adore a good heartfelt fictional story with a beautiful historical flavour.

Rich in atmosphere

There's something so comforting about a gothic mystery, that makes you feel like curling up by the fire on a wild night. Fans of Kate Morton or The Little Stranger will enjoy this atmospheric story set in a crumbling Elizabethan manor house in 1930s rural England. Alice Eveleigh is a young woman who has expecting a child after a brief, disastrous relationship. Her mother sends her away to stay at remote Fiercombe Manor until she has the baby.

When Alice arrives at the Manor, she learns about Elizabeth Stanton, who lived there and was married to the baronet a generation earlier. No one seems to know what happened to Elizabeth, or if they do, they don't want to talk about it. Alice stumbles onto Elizabeth's diary and starts to gradually piece together the story of what happened to her.

Can I just say at this point that "The Girl in the Photograph" is a terrible title for this book? For starters, it doesn't sound like it's going to be about someone from the 19th century. Nor is Elizabeth a girl, but if the title refers to her daughter that is even more misleading because she's not the one that Alice is interested in. And lastly, Alice spends most of the book being fascinated by Elizabeth without ever seeing a photograph of her at all. The US edition is titled "Fiercombe Manor", which is better, though still not very appealing.

Putting that little rant aside, I did enjoy this book - it has a real atmosphere about it, a little creepy, a little intriguing. The pace is quite slow and I got a little annoyed by the way Alice was fond of telling us things like "I could never have imagined how much my life was about to change" - just get on with the story, please! But for the most part the author is in complete control of how much she wants us to be able to work out at any given time and the revelations unfold with impeccable timing.

In the acknowledgements section at the very end of the book, the author explains that she based the fictional Fiercombe Manor on the real Owlpen Manor in Gloucestershire. If you look online there are a number of photographs of Owlpen Manor and you may like to look them up before reading the book.

‘The Girl in the Photograph’ by Kate Riordan began with great promise but I thought the pace a little bit too slow and that it wound up fizzling out a bit towards the end. The story is told by two women, Alice in 1933 and Elizabeth in 1898, who both live at the Gothic and secluded English country estate, Firecombe Manor. When Alice became pregnant to her married boyfriend her mother sent her away to stay with her childhood friend, Edith Jelphs, who works as a maid at Firecomb Manor.

Alice soon discovers Elizabeth’s old diaries and begins a quest to discover all of the mysteries that Firecombe Manor holds. Even though Edith worked for Elizabeth she is reluctant to speak about the past, so Alice is left to do most of the investigating on her own, with a bit of help from a local historian.

I particularly enjoyed the chapters of ‘The Girl in the Photograph’ which were told from Elizabeth’s perspective. They had a real mysterious and Gothic feel to them and I was really interested to find out what happened to her and her children. I did feel though that Alice’s chapters dragged on a bit and that the ending was rather anticlimactic, but these are all very likely just a matter of my own personal preferences. The story was well written and the mysteries are subtly, although slowly, revealed in a way that will appeal to readers who enjoy Gothic mysteries.

The Girl in the Photograph was published in the USA under the title Firecombe Manor.
