Valuable Knowledge in the Difficult Area of Software Management

Don Reifer is one of the pioneers in the areas of software acquisition, management, and estimation. His background speaks for itself and one of his greatest talents is sharing his information with seasoned professionals and neophyte interns alike.

_Software War Stories_ is a textbook-style case analysis of twelve scenarios that the author has personally witnessed. While some of the headings may seem very specific (e.g. "Government Case: Addressing Cyber-Crime on the Internet"), th elessons are applicanble to multiple disciplines and areas. Each chapter details a common problem faced by software acquisition professionals and challenges the reader with a subsequent exercise on par with advanced exercises used within the Defense Acquisition University. The author presents solutions to the exercise and points out the evidence presented in the case to back up the position. There is probably room for discussion on the solutions and that would be another added benefit of this book - the challenge to think of alternate conclusions or evidence. Possibly the best reference in _Software War Stories_ is the final chapter that brings the nuggets altogether. In a difficult area like software acquisition and management, the author has presented tangible evidence and knowledge that can be accessed without the need for expensive training or sub-contracting. Nothing replaces doing it yourself, but this book might help you do it right the first time.

Execellent resource for Engineering Managers

I’m pleased to provide my comments on Don Reifer’s book, entitled, “SOFTWARE WAR STORIES: Case Studies in Software Management”. Don Reifer is a respected source of information based on the analysis of Industry, Government and Academic productivity and cost data and classifying the information within specific domains which assist the reader in applying the information to perform benchmarking of the reader’s available information. I have known Don for over 25 years and have reviewed and discussed with him the analysis of data that he has published. I am pleased to have this book as a reference and found each of the case-studies to give valuable insight into the application of the methodology and technologies, within the specific domain that the case-study applied to.
I found the “SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS AND LESSONS LEARNED”, “REFERENCES” and “WEB POINTER” sections at the end of each chapter, very valuable. Don also provides “options” and “recommendations” in as part of several of the chapters. This provides an individual insight into Don’s expert analysis and judgment. The chapter that I enjoyed the most was Chapter 14 PULLING IT ALL TOGETHER.

Teen love and woe skillfully presented

Suzy Blue's story is one that sticks with you. Nevermind the typical teenage misery of school, boys, mean girls and divorced parents Suzy has SO much more to deal with! Overall a great read with a clean flow to the story. I honestly didn't like the ending but could see the set up for a future novel...which I know I would read too.

About the Author

Craig A. Mertler is currently a Professor and Director of the Doctoral Program in School Improvement in the College of Education at the University of West Georgia. He teaches doctoral courses focused on the application of action research to promote school improvement and reform, and also teaches quantitative research methods, introductory statistical analysis, multivariate statistical analysis, and educational assessment methods. He is the author of 5 books, 2 invited book chapters, 15 refereed journal articles, 2 instructors’ manuals, and numerous nonrefereed articles and manuscripts. He has also presented numerous research papers at professional meetings around the country, as well as internationally. He conducts workshops for inservice educational professionals on classroom-based action research and on the broad topic of classroom assessment. His primary research interests include classroom-based action research, professional learning communities, and assessment practices of classroom teachers. Before teaching and researching at the university level, he taught high school biology and earth science, and also coached track and volleyball. In his leisure time, he enjoys travelling with his family and playing golf.

An excellent, clearly-written book

I think this book is a gem! It's clearly written in a step-by-step way that is extremely helpful in this course. I really appreciate the sample research proposals and the examples. This book helped me prepare for my own research project.

Errors abound

I was very disappointed with this textbook. The opening chapter is misleading as it only presents the quantitative view of research (even though the book does include a later chapter on ethnography). And too many errors! The statistics sections are unreliable and not useful to students; the appendix, in particular, contains errors and misleading information.
In my personal opinion, I caution people from relying on the information in the textbook.

Anyone who is doing reports or working on a thesis, this book is a great tool to have. I am currently working on my masters and having this book has given me great insight on literature writtings. I will be able to use it as a guide and teaching tool for my kids.

Poor Introduction but a Good Example of Neoplatonic Philosophy

Plotinus was a 3rd Century c.e. philosopher whose work was an attempt at bringing new life to the ideas of Plato. He would later be described as an early founder of the Neoplatonist philosophic movement. This is a later category used by 19th century historians, but he himself would have only identified himself as a Platonist philosopher an nothing more.

Thus the ideas found within, An Essay on the Beautiful is very much in line with the idea of finding beauty by looking for it's purest essence. This idea was derived from Plato's theory of forms. The most prominent idea put emphasized by Plotinus is that in order to understand beauty you need to search for it's underlying form or essence. He also identifies "pure" beauty with the "pure" good and to understand it you need to be a good or virtuous person otherwise your judgement is not clear and you will not be able to discern what is truly beautiful, because you are not truly good.

The ideas are strait forward and you can see certain "Neoplatonic" ideas showing up in early Christian theology with Saint Augustine being a prime example.

The text was clearly translated, but often times uses an incredibly complex words where much simpler ones would work.

The only downside of this version is the lengthy introduction that tells us absolutely nothing about what's in the text or anything about Plotinus. It is just a bunch of flowery words praising the ideas within without telling you anything about them or the person who wrote it.

This book is not for everyone. It would enjoyed most by students of philosophy, history, or ancient religion. Otherwise if you want to read it go knock yourself out because though it's philosophic in nature, it is short and the ideas are strait forward.

This is a treatise that should be read and re-read. It is illuminating when you realize the influence of Plato's ideas realized by Plotinus and how it affects so many of our visionary poets.

Plotinus or Thomas Taylor?

In all honesty I believe the translator translated this in such away that it fit more with their own wording and thought processes, I may be wrong since I have no other examples to bass this on. However the preface written by the translator has the exact same sense and feel about it, even incorporating the same psychological feel, both the Intro and the actual Essay, are written in the same round about way. It's something I used to do in High School and is I would say intellectually childish, it was a process where really nothing was said at all, but was written in such a fashion as to confuse the reader, the reader thus being confused would think that this must be brilliant because a scholar must be needed to understand this. The real question becomes thus, is the Intro written by a person so caught up in the writings of Plotinus that he has adapted his style and perhaps his very personality from Plotinus, or has the translator twisted the works of Plotinus to be like his very writing style? I can't answer that with out more research, do to the lack of research materials available me...

In all honesty this needs to be read and reread, and I would not recommend this to just anyone, this is a very difficult read, it does go in circles often dropping in unrelated lines, that seem to make no sense what so ever. One could quite frankly develop a migraine reading this.

For anyone who has an interest in motor sport this book is fantastic, all those famous names attached to high performance equipment we have used at some time come to life. Learning about these innovative folks who often built components with the bare minimum of equipment and technology has been a treat and provided me with many hours of enjoyable reading. A nitro fed read !!
